The Jean Monnet Module "EU — Central Asia Relations: New Horizons for Regional Integration, Partnership and Cooperation (EUCA-RIPC)" (Project ID: 101127257), is a project that aims to promote academic research and teaching on regional integration in Central Asia with the European integration as a frame of reference.
EUCA-RIPC project received the prestigious Jean Monnet grant from the European Union in 2023. The project consists of three components, each targeting a different audience group, ranging from senior high school students to advanced undergraduate or master’s degree university students, as well as academic scholars, business leaders, and policymakers.
Curriculum Development:
The academic course "The EU as a Role Model for Economic and Political Regional Integration," offered once a year during the Spring semester, is intended to provide university students, the future leaders of Central Asia, with a solid understanding of the EU as a successful model for regional integration and to explain why previous integration efforts in Central Asia and the larger former Soviet space have failed. The course also aligns with the curriculum development for the new "European Studies" specialization offered to students majoring in International Relations at KIMEP University. The course is taught by a team of faculty members from KIMEP University's College of Social Sciences specializing in different economic and political aspects of integration, and each section of the course features guest lectures by external speakers familiar with the subject and its real-world applications.
Conference:
The "Central Asian Regional Integration in the Vertex of the EU, Russia and China" is a two-day conference exploring the challenges and prospects for regional integration in Central Asia both in the context of regional vectors as well as the competing strategies of major external powers such as the European Union, China, United States, and Russia. The conference features two in-person expert panel discussion sessions held at KIMEP University on November 14, 2024, and two academic paper sessions organized in an online format on November 15 in collaboration with the Economic Diplomacy journal. Discussions and presentations revolve around two central themes of 'Regional Integration Challenges, Opportunities, and Prospects in Central Asia', and 'Influence of Global Powers on Central Asia’s Regionalism'.
Summer Schools:
The EUCA Model EU Summer School held annually during the last weeks of May and early June is open to all university students as well as senior high school students in Almaty. Through guest lectures, short assignments, tutorials, and supervised peer learning in a hybrid online and in-person format, a larger pool of young audiences get familiarized with key concepts and the institutional structure of the European Union. The workshops culminate in a simulated European Council session during which the students gain hands-on experience with consensus policymaking.

KIMEP University is the oldest and the largest North American-style University in Central Asia. It was founded in 1992 by the decree of Nursultan Nazarbayev, the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. KIMEP is an independent not-for-profit educational institution serving a multicultural and multinational student body. It is situated on a modern campus in the center of Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan.
KIMEP's College of Social Sciences (CSS) is home to the Departments of Economics, Political Science and International Relations, Public Administration, Media and Communication, and KIMEP's China & Central Asia Studies Center (CCASC), offering programs at the bachelor, master, and doctoral levels.

Maryam Agharabi is a Doctoral Researcher at KIMEP University, Kazakhstan, focusing on the European Union's external governance and EU–Central Asia policy relations, with particular attention to environmental policymaking and sustainable development. She leads multiple EU-funded projects on curriculum development, teaching, and research enhancement in EU Studies, and serves as Research Coordinator at the China and Central Asia Studies Center, KIMEP University, Almaty. She holds a Master’s degree in Central, East European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies from the University of Glasgow.
